We were advised of the requirement to have a learner's
licence before passing matric by one of the schools. Thank
you to the alert teacher who pointed this out to us!
Obviously a conscientious teacher, deeply concerned about
her students...
We have also been told by various people that the curriculum
has subsequently changed and that a learner's licence is no
longer compulsory for matric.
Surely the Department of Education would have made the
change clear to all the schools? However, it seems that
nobody is quite clear on what is happening in this regard.
We have been trying without success to obtain written
confirmation of the later version of the Life Orientation
requirements for matric next year.
Our feeling is this: Even if it is one of the voluntary
subjects for matriculants next year, the Gauteng Shared Call
Service Centre, and other test centres around the country
are all having the same struggle. No-one has sufficient
appointments to meet the needs of the public it seems.
When we phoned Pietermaritzburg we heard the delay to book a
driver's licence appointment is well into January, even
February next year by now, which is a five to six month
delay. Durban and surrounding areas were just as bad.
This matter can't go on. Proper Government of any country is
dependant on wise decisions being made by those in
authority. While we at SAIDI respect the authorities that
exist, we are appealing to them to recognise the need of the
population and to enable the public to obtain legal driver's
licences in a well-managed way, in the shortest time
possible. After all, we have a growing economy, thank God!
We are building a New South Africa. Now is NOT the
time to clamp down on legal drivers licences.
